Ever since he came to New York in 1993 from Venezuela, Perdomo has emerged as one of the most in-demand sidemen – as evidenced by his celebrated work with a wide array of jazz and Latin stars – from Ravi Coltrane to Ray Barretto, and by his six critically- acclaimed recordings as a leader. The release of his magnificent new, Hot Tone label debut CD, 22, features bassist Mimi Jones’ supple, deep basslines and drummer Rudy Royston’s quicksilver rhythms, in a trio he christened The Controlling Ear Unit. “I wanted to create an environment where a sensitive player could make his own musical choices, without fear of the consequences,” Perdomo says. “The word ‘unit’ is appropriate because although the current group is a trio, it doesn’t really have to be restrained to that. It could have a different format, depending on what the music calls for.”
John Benitez:
A review in DownBeat hails John Benitez as “one of today’s top ranking bassists.” Since moving to New York almost two decades ago, the bassist has performed with a staggering roster of iconic artists, including Chick Corea, John Scofield, Tito Puente, Roy Hargrove, Danilo Perez, and Eddie Palmieri, who once declared John to be “the best bass player in the world.”
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, John got his start early, enrolling in the Escuela Libre de Musica at the age of thirteen. He later completed additional studies at the University of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Conservatory, where he apprenticed under Federico Silva. Yet his thirst for knowledge soon brought him to New York, where he continued his education under the tutelage of Ron Carter at the City University of New York.
Marc Miralta:
He studied at the School of Music Zeleste (CDMBR) Barcelona (1980-1984), the Conservatory of Music in Barcelona (1982-1989), the Taller de Barcelona (1984-1990) and at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA) (1990-1993).
He has played with bands of different musical styles, including classical music with the Youth Orchestra of the European Common Market (ECYO), directed by Claudio Abbado, the Vallès Symphony Orchestra and the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra. He taught the battery Taller (1986-1990) as well as courses in San Sebastián battery, Cadiz, Sedaví, Granollers, Igualada, Zarautz, Rousse (Bulgaria), Langnau (Switzerland), Seville, etc … He currently teaches drums and vibraphone at the Liceu in Barcelona. He has recorded more than cincuantena CDs with various ensembles, including his first album as leader of New York Flamenco Reunion (Nuevos Medios, 15774). Just released “Dreams” Marc Miralta Quartet (FSNT) compositions of its leader and Seamus Blake on sax, Ed Simon on piano and Omer Avital on bass. Co-leads the OAM Trio with Aaron Goldberg and Omer Avital and CMS TRIO Javier Colina iPerico Sambeat. Performing:
