Named one of four pianists on the rise by the New York Times, Cuban born pianist David Virelles grew up in a musical home. He started studying music at seven, as well as being exposed to the Cuban musical traditions. He has performed with: Ravi Coltrane, Henry Threadgill, Tomasz Stanko, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Steve Coleman, Andrew Cyrille, “Changuito”, Stanley Cowell, , Chris Potter, among others.
His latest album Mbòkó, was released on October 7th, 2014 on the Munich label ECM and ended up in virtually every Best Of The Year 2014 lists, including the New York Times, NPR, ITunes, The Village Voice, among other publications.
After graduating from the Higher Institute of Art in Havana , Filiu joined to the well-known band Irakere, leaded by Chucho Valdes, from 1997 to 2006. Also Filiu played alto saxophone for Chucho Valdés’ album New Conceptions, which won a Grammy Award later in 2004.He has played and recorded with other important musicians as Lazaro Ross, Compay Segundo, Omara Portuondo, Pablo Milanés, Incognito, Doug Hammond , Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Dafnis Prieto and Henry Threadgill, among others.
His latest album “Musae” released on 2012 won the Cubadisco Award on the jazz category.The duo will explore improvisation through the afrocuban music tradition bringing a unique sound full of rhythms and colors.
