About Raul Rodriguez:
Musician and Cultural Anthropologist. Producer, singer-songwriter, flamenco guitarist and creator of “Tres Flamenco”.
Since 1992, he has worked as a sideman with Kiko Veneno, Martirio (his mother), Javier Ruibal and Juan Perro (Santiago Auserón), and as part of his own projects such as the bands Caraoscura (1992-95) and Son de la Frontera (2003-2008).
He has published two solo works in Book-Disc format, Razón de Son and La Raíz Eléctrica (Altafonte, 2014 and 2017), in which he develops his own line of research and composition in a cross-discipline, a “Creative AnthropoMusic de Ida y Vuelta” (songs of back and forth) from which he delves into the connections between Flamenco music and the cultural framework of the Afro-Andalusian Caribbean.
He designed his own unique instrument, the “Tres Flamenco”, mixing flamenco guitar and cuban tres, creating a new sound with crossed heritage influences wich allows him to interactuate with musicians from another cultures. In this last years, he continues with his anthropological research work making lectures and conferences in universities in Europe, Africa and America, and opening a way of creative encounters on trips to México, Haiti, Mali, Senegal, Equatorial Guinea or Madagascar, focusing these interventions as an integral project of cooperation and creationship between musicians from different cultures.
In his 30-year career, he has also recorded and played live shows with artists such as Chavela Vargas, Compay Segundo, Enrique Morente, Jackson Browne, Omara Portuondo, Toumani Diabaté, Lila Downs, Susana Baca, Marta Valdés, Manuel García, Chano Domínguez, Jorge Pardo, Javier Colina, Jerry González, Pancho Amat, Phil Manzanera, Habib Koité, Tony Allen, Trilok Gurtu, Rajery, Paul Beaubrun, Jonathan Wilson, Jon Russell, Jenny Lewis, Perla Batalla, John Cale, David Lindley, Jonathan Richman, Jorge Drexler, Silvia Pérez-Cruz, Miguel Poveda, Mayte Martín, Duquende or Rocío Molina, among many others.
“Raúl Rodríguez is taking the baton of invention in Spanish popular music”. (Santiago Auserón)
