About Mobéy Lola Irizarry:

Mobéy Lola Irizarry (they/she) is a genderqueer cultural worker specializing in salsa, bomba, and transdisciplinary performance, based in Brooklyn. Rooted in the Puerto Rican diaspora from Hartford, CT, and a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, they draw from decolonial movements, queer club culture, and precolonial drum and braid traditions. Lola is the creative director and conguera for Las Mariquitas, NYC’s queer and trans salsa band, and performs with the experimental trio Dendarry Bakery and Latin rock group Avataredén. A composer for Samora La Perdida’s musical “Spanglish Sh!t” and an alumnus of EMERGENYC, Lola has been quoted in Rolling Stone, stating, “I want to abolish patriarchy in salsa… this is a duty to our lineage.”

About Samira Mendoza:

Samira is a Brooklyn-based transdisciplinary performance artist, curator, and educator whose work centers on improvisation across various mediums, including sound, sculpture, organizing, and movement. Their art explores themes of oppressive systems, familial history in Latin America and the Caribbean, and personal experiences growing up in the American South. For Mendoza, improvisation is an act of resistance and a way to reject formal structures and generate new ideas.

Samira is involved in several dynamic projects, including Dendarry Bakery, an experimental trio blending Afro-Caribbean and electronic percussion with improvisatory Spanglish vocals and games from pre-colonization times to explore queerness and liberation; Las Mariquitas, a queer and trans-centered salsa band creating safe spaces in a traditionally cis-hetero genre; Dyspheric, a Pittsburgh-based collective focusing on Black and Brown queer and trans DJs; and The Uhaul Disco, a DIY party celebrating cultural and generational diversity.
