About Manuel Valera:

Born and raised in Havana, Grammy-nominated and Guggenheim Fellow pianist and composer Manuel Valera has become a prominent figure in the modern jazz scene since moving to New York City. He has collaborated with renowned artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. In 2020, Valera joined Steve Smith’s legendary group, Vital Information.

Valera has recorded 18 CDs as a bandleader, including projects like his Grammy-nominated New Cuban Express, a modern contemporary trio, solo piano works, and the New Cuban Express Big Band. His innovative compositions blend diverse musical styles, earning him critical acclaim and a dedicated following.

He has received numerous awards, including a 2019 Guggenheim Fellowship, three Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grants, and two Dranoff International 2 Piano Foundation commissions. Valera has performed in over 30 countries at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide.

As a sideman, Valera has toured and recorded with Steve Smith & Vital Information, Dafnis Prieto, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Joel Frahm, Essiet Essiet, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, among others. His versatility and dedication continue to influence the jazz world significantly.
